Healthier Students Are Better Learners: A Missing Link in Efforts to Close the Achievement Gap
Featuring the research of Charles Basch, the Richard March Hoe Professor of Health Education
at Teachers College.
How do health disparities affect
student achievement? Charles Basch, Richard March Hoe Professor of Health
Education at Teachers College, will present his research paper in which he
identifies seven educationally relevant health disparities that exert a powerful,
but generally overlooked, influence on the achievement gap in schools serving
urban minority youth: (1) vision, (2) asthma, (3) teen pregnancy (4) aggression
and violence, (5) physical activity, (6) breakfast, and (7) inattention and hyperactivity. He argues that, in order to realize
educational benefits, school health programs and policies must address these
disparities comprehensively and in ways that are both coordinated and
strategic.
